Hackers took credit for shutting down the city of Oakland’s website, including the sites of the fire and police departments.
On Wednesday afternoon, city websites showed only the message, “The page cannot be displayed.”
The group Anonymous, a loose network of hackers who launch cyberattacks over their favored social causes, appeared to claim responsiblity. On Twitter, an account affiliated with Anonymous declared, “Tango Down: http://oaklandpolice.com #ShutItDown #ICantBreath.”
Anonymous has supported recent demonstrations over the police killings of unarmed black men Michael Brown of Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner of New Yo
